Guest Blogger - Robyn - Toronto Girl In Paris!

My name is Robyn and I’m a typical mid-20-something year-old girl from Toronto. I’m in PR and love what I do. My two other loves are sports and tech products. But because of my love for sports and tech, I’m what most people would call a tomboy. These days I try to only let my tomboy side come out on the football field or volleyball court.

I recently took two crazy back-to-back trips to Europe in one month and wrote home to my girlfriends along the way about some of my nerves, laughs, and excitement. My girlfriends thought my notes home were entertaining and so I thought I’d share a bit about my unbelievable trips. Here’s my first note home (I wrote this from the lounge in Pearson Airport)

Up, up and away….to Paris?

image

Nerves would be an understatement to describe the way I’m feeling right now or the way that I’ve felt all week. A minute ago I felt so nauseous I thought I might faint, so I grabbed a ginger ale (because that’s what I drink when I don’t feel well) and decided to document every terrifying moment I was about to experience over the next three days.

image

I’ll promise to try and include some of the good moments in my notes home, but for now everything about this trip is terrifying. This is absolutely the craziest thing I’ve ever done – and I mean EVER. I’m the girl who moved home half way through university in order to still have dinner with my family every night. I’m also the girl who hangs out with her parents when I don’t feel like staying up to the wee hours of the morning partying.

Okay, I have to jump in here and defend myself. I’m not a total nerd, but I do love ‘family time’. My family is super close and we routinely have family euchre nights, ladies night and the like. Don’t get me wrong, I also love and cherish partying with friends, but let’s be honest, my body can’t handle going out every night. Now that I’ve cleared that up, back to my journal…

I’m sitting here in the “Club Lounge” aka the place where people come to consume adult beverages, eat disgusting app-ies and talk really loudly on their cell phones. I’m not sure if it’s mandatory, but I’m pretty sure there must be a sign somewhere in here that reads: “Upon entry all guests must place their cell phone volume on the loudest, most annoying ringer possible”. Note: my cell phone is currently on vibrate and will remain that way.

And that brings me to my next thought. How the heck did I get here. And why did I think this was a good idea. I’m petrified beyond belief to fly across the ocean on my own. Oh and let’s not forget that I’m going to a country where I don’t speak the language (I dropped French after grade 9) and oh yes, right, to be meeting a guy I barely know. I should also mention that this trip was booked by someone other than me so I don’t have all of my confirmation numbers, just a plane ticket.

Being a Virgo, I feel doomed and close to failure at this moment. While most people in my shoes (Nike Free 5.0’s) would feel thrilled or excited, I still just feel nauseous. Umm….“more ginger ale please!” Isn’t it Jay-Z who raps “On to the next one?” He’s talking about ginger ale for his tummy right?…Regardless, he’s a musical genius.

image

Okay so maybe I’m not doomed, but Virgo’s like details and are very organized, especially when they travel. A Virgo starts packing at least two weeks before any trip, not two days. A Virgo has city maps, alternate route plans, a schedule, hand sanitizer, pre-purchased city tours and does not take a trip to Paris with just a week’s notice. But alas, I am here…in the “Club Lounge”. My baggage is checked and probably being loaded onto the plane at this moment and I’m into my second pop, about to get my third (What? It’s free! And when will this ever happen to me again?). I have my $4800 (EUR) ticket that I’m petrified to loose and will be departing for Paris in T-minus 1.5 hours. F – I still have 1.5 hours….

You may now be wondering how I ended up in the Club Lounge at Pearson and why I was on my way to Paris, and those are both good questions. I have so much more to share and will include more details about why I was heading to Paris in my next entry.
